Freelance Information Architect
Introduction
We are looking for an experienced freelance information architect for a large public knowledge organization. You will set up a new architecture domain, from assessing the current situation to providing concrete architecture recommendations.
Organization
The organization has a large IT department. IT governance is divided into domains, which serve as the basis for innovation initiatives and roadmaps.
A new domain has recently been added. It encompasses the systems used to manage, provide access to, and preserve information sources and collections—both digital and physical—for the long term. The landscape consists of several dozen applications: core systems, satellite applications, websites, and supporting tools.
This field is still in its infancy. There is not yet a clear picture of the processes, applications, and integrations. You will lay that foundation, together with the line managers and the architecture team.
Job Information
The first step is to map out the landscape. You do this together with a process analyst. Next, you work with the stakeholders to identify the most important challenges and draft an architecture recommendation for the most urgent ones.
Core Responsibilities:
- In the first few weeks, develop a plan for the execution, delivery, and communication of the project
- Work with a process analyst to document the current situation (IST) in a hierarchical process model: end-to-end, business, and work processes
- Linking applications to processes in the organization's architecture tool
- Mapping out the integration architecture, including the interfaces with other domains
- Conduct interviews and organize workshops with specialists, policy staff, enterprise architects, and domain architects
- Sharing knowledge about the value and necessity of information architecture
- Reporting to the head of the IT organization
Result of the assignment:
- A process model of the current situation, showing the applications linked to each process
- An overview of the integration architecture and its interfaces with other domains
- An assessment of the IV and IT challenges, along with architectural recommendations on the most urgent issues, to serve as input for a multi-year roadmap
- Recommendations for the Structural Design of the Domain Architecture
Job Requirements
- Completed higher professional education (HBO) or university (WO) degree
- At least 3 years of verifiable experience as an information architect
- Knowledge of architectural models and frameworks such as TOGAF and ArchiMate
- Fluency in spoken and written Dutch
- Strong communication skills, self-reliant and methodical, with a keen sense of organizational dynamics
Pros
- Experience with sector-specific reference architectures
- Experience in areas related to collection, archival, or information management
- Experience with an enterprise architecture tool for modeling and documenting the application landscape
Offer
- Start: late November 2026
- Duration: 6 months, with the option to extend (2 x 3 months)
- 16 hours per week (2 days)
- 2 days a week on-site (preferably Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday)
- Rate: negotiable
