Freelance OpenShift Engineer (ARO)
Introduction
Are you an experienced Platform Engineer who has truly mastered OpenShift and Kubernetes in a production environment? We’re looking for senior engineers for a large organization in the Randstad to further develop the container platform and help development teams deliver faster and more securely.
Organization
The client is a large Dutch organization with a 24/7 operation. Many business-critical processes run on its own IT infrastructure. The container platform is one of the central platforms on which product teams build, deploy, and manage their applications.
You'll join a team of experienced platform engineers who provide the OpenShift platform as an internal service to the rest of the organization. The team is self-organized and works using Scrum. The focus is on automation, self-service, and knowledge sharing.
The culture is pragmatic: we’d rather have a solution that works and is easy to maintain than one that’s perfect on paper. Priorities may shift if the organization requires it, so you need to be able to adapt easily.
Job Information
You’ll work on both on-premises OpenShift clusters and Azure Red Hat OpenShift. You’ll contribute to technical decision-making, automate processes wherever possible, and systematically resolve complex issues. You’ll also serve as a go-to resource for colleagues and product teams.
Core Responsibilities:
- Automate platform provisioning, configuration, and application deployment using Terraform, Ansible, and Argo CD (IaC and GitOps).
- Build self-service features, standard workflows, and reusable platform services for development teams.
- Ensure consistent platform functionality between on-premises OpenShift and Azure Red Hat OpenShift.
- Analyze complex incidents (root cause) and implement structural improvements.
- Integrate security, compliance, and governance requirements into the platform, pipelines, and processes.
- Improve the platform's observability, scalability, and stability.
- Develop engineering standards and share knowledge through documentation, code reviews, and collaboration with other teams.
Result of the assignment:
- A more sophisticated self-service container platform for the development teams.
- A larger portion of the setup and deployment is handled through GitOps and IaC.
- Fewer recurring incidents thanks to structural solutions.
- Clear standards and documentation that the team can maintain on its own.
Job Requirements
- A completed associate's degree or a demonstrable equivalent level of work experience and intellectual ability.
- Extensive hands-on experience with the design, management, and troubleshooting of OpenShift or Kubernetes in production, within a complex enterprise environment.
- In-depth knowledge of OpenShift management, containers, platform security, networking, storage, and deployment strategies.
- Experience with IaC and GitOps using Terraform, Ansible, and Argo CD.
- You'll write maintainable code in Python or Go for automation, tooling, and integrations.
- Experience setting up and managing CI/CD processes.
- Knowledge of computing, networking, and storage in physical, virtualized, and cloud environments.
- A Vision for the Responsible Use of AI Tools in Engineering.
- Strong analytical skills and good communication skills when interacting with engineers and stakeholders.
- Excellent spoken and written English.
Pros
- Experience with Microsoft Azure, particularly Azure Red Hat OpenShift.
- Proficiency in the Dutch language.
Offer
- Start: December 1, 2026
- Duration: approximately 12 months
- Hours: 36 hours per week
- Location: Randstad (Amsterdam area); work arrangements to be discussed
